Why Plant A New Church?
Good Question…
In John 15, Jesus tells his disciples, “You did not chose me, I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit…”
In any given community in our country today, few churches are bearing fruit. If God has called disciples of Jesus to go and bear fruit then there is much work to be done. Not reaching other church people, or making other followers of Jesus more comfortable, but harvesting brand new fruit – people who have no connection with Jesus. People that, let’s be honest, many churches aren’t interested in.
A demographic study of the Henry County area reveals that nearly 200,000 people live within a 10-mile radius of our possible location, with 35% growth expected in the next eight years. Not only is this a growing area, it is an unchurched area. 80% or 160,000 of those 200,000 people do not attend church, and many more are moving to the area everyday.
According to David T. Olson, just for the church to keep up with current population growth alone, there would need to have been over 1500 new churches planted as of 2005. This means that even if people in Metro Atlanta wanted to attend a church that didn’t already, there isn’t enough room for them. The numbers are absolutely staggering. We’re going to do something about it.
We’re going to go all out to connect with those people who Jesus misses most, bringing the gospel to the forefront of the community.
Leonard Sweet says, “Light illuminates the darkness. If there’s darkness, the blame should be attached where it belongs; not to the world that is dark, but to the church which is failing to provide the light.”
The time is now for the church in our community to do whatever it takes to reach the broken, the hurting and those far away from God.
