Why I Got Certified by the IAT
When I decided to pursue certification in trichology, I wanted a program that would provide the highest level of education, global credibility, and a strong network of experts. That’s why I chose to get certified by the International Association of Trichologists (IAT)—a globally recognized, university-developed, and non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the science of hair and scalp health.
Global Perspective for Hair and Scalp Science
As a global organization, the IAT provides access to the latest research, updates, and solutions from around the world. Having insights from and the ability to connect with leading trichologists across different countries is invaluable. Widening the lens on advancements in hair and scalp health ensures that I stay up to date with the newest protocols, challenging cases, and emerging treatments.
The Only University-Developed Trichology Course
Another major factor in my decision was the academic foundation of the IAT program. Unlike many other trichology certifications, the IAT curriculum was developed at the University of Southern California (USC) in 1974-75 under a grant from the Redken Foundation. This means the program is backed by real scientific research and structured as a true educational discipline. The course was designed under the guidance of David Salinger, the former Executive Director and current Head of Education for IAT. He is a renowned trichologist who has trained students from over 65 countries during his career.
A Non-Profit Organization Focused on Education
I also appreciate that the IAT is a non-profit organization, meaning its focus is purely on education. Some trichology programs operate as differently, prioritizing fast-track certifications that don’t necessarily equip students with the depth of knowledge needed to truly help clients.
With the IAT, I knew I was joining an organization that prioritizes scientific integrity, ongoing education, and professional development.
A Rigorous and Comprehensive Program
The IAT certification is not a quick, one-day or weekend course—it’s a thorough program that requires both extensive study and hands-on, in-clinic training.
The curriculum provides background in everything from chemistry, physiology, to microscopy, and more. This ensures that IAT certified trichologists develop a deep understanding of hair and scalp disorders, their potential root causes, and the most effective treatment options.
